Over 2,000 years ago, Hindu and Buddhist civilizations from India
reached Indonesia. By the 15th and 16th Centuries, Islam had
implanted itself as the predominant religion. By the 17th
Century, Portuguese traders were replaced by the Dutch and by
1750 had control of Java, the central island of Indonesia. After
the Japanese occupation during World War II, nationalists led by
Sukarno and Hatta proclaimed a republic and on December 27, 1949,
after four years of fighting, the Netherlands ceded control.
Sukarno suspended Parliament in 1960 and in 1962 was named
President for life. In 1964 and 1965, Russian armed Indonesian
troops staged attacks into Malaysia. Indonesia's pro-Peking
Communist party tried to seize control in 1965, but was smashed
by the army. Over 300,000 suspected communists were executed.
General Suharto was named President in 1968 and reelected in 1973
and 1978. The military retains a predominant political role.
Oil exports and the political stability of recent years have made
Indonesia's economy one of the most stable and growing in the
Pacific region. @
